Summer is here and it’s time to put your toes into the sand and your eyes onto the pages of a good book. Some people like fiction; my preference is non-fiction. Listed below is my 2024 Summer List of books I have recently read or am currently reading. Take the time to get lost in a good book this summer. All books are available on Amazon. Cheers!
“The Coming Wave” by Mustafa Suleyman
Excellent background about the power of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and other fast-developing technologies (Synthetic Biology), the risks that AI has to the global order, and how we might contain them.
“Bitcoin Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich
A fascinating account of the brothers Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss's venture into the world of crypto-currency and its notable outcomes. A highlight of the early believers in Bitcoin.
“The Last Castle” by Denise Kiernan
The story follows Edith Stuyvesant Dresser and George Vanderbilt, a wealthy and bookish man dedicated to erecting the largest home in America on 125,000 acres in North Carolina.
This story should be made into a movie—an excellent read.
“The First Tycoon” by T J Stiles
This is an elegant read and massively researched. It’s about the improbable life of Cornelius “Commodore” Vanderbilt. His humble beginnings to his death as one of the wealthiest men in American history. From sea transportation to railroads, the Panama Canal, and the California gold rush. Epic in scope, the rise of Vanderbilt is also the story of the rise of America itself.
“The King and Queen of Malibu” by David K Randall.
The real story of the battle for paradise…men and women fighting for a slice of earth like no other. Malibu, CA. (currently reading )
“Fabric” by Victoria Finlay
A work of original research that unravels history through textiles and cloth- how we make it, use it and what it means to us. Told by the author in a very personal manner. (Currently reading)
